Pendant la préparation de l’album « Michael », Teddy Riley a été engagé pour travailler sur plusieurs chansons, y compris « Breaking News », un morceau que Michael a enregistré avec Eddie Cascio et James Porte fin 2007 alors qu’il séjournait chez la famille Cascio avec ses enfants. Riley a produit le titre et l’a soumis à Sony en vue de l’inclure sur l’album.
MJFrance: Il est dit que Teddy Riley a été engagé pour travailler sur plusieurs chansons y compris Breaking News. Il a produit le titre et la soumis à Sony. Mais qui a engagé Teddy Riley ? L’Estate ou Sony ? Quel était l’état de ces enregistrements audios ? Sur quels supports avaient-ils été enregistrés ? Etaient-ils vraiment exploitables ? D’une exploitation digne de ce nom ?
Communiqué: À l’époque personne n’a jamais exprimé de doutes quant à l’authenticité de la voix de Michael sur les chansons de Cascio, qui étaient à l’état de démo. Nous savions par contre que les chœurs étaient un mélange des voix de Michael et de James Porte.

Communiqué: Suite à ces interrogations, les deux exécuteurs testamentaires de Michael, John Branca et John McClain, m’ont immédiatement demandé d’enquêter sur cette affaire.

Comment, au moindre doute concernant l’héritage de la musique de Michael Jackson, l’Estate, ou Sony, ne prennent-ils pas la précaution d’écarter un tel titre ? Des tas de titres inédits existent. Pourquoi prendre ce risque avec le Roi de la Pop, une telle légende de la musique ?
Communiqué: Six producteurs et ingénieurs du son ayant travaillé avec Michael au cours des trente dernières années – à savoir Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze et Teddy Riley – ont été invités à venir écouter la version a cappella des titres en question et à émettre leur avis. Toutes ces personnes ont confirmé que la voix était bien celle de Michael.

Généralement, à l’écoute d’une version a capella d’un artiste, il est rare que quelqu’un exprime en dehors d’un avis personnel sur un titre, que la voix du chanteur est bien la sienne !!! Ou sont leurs déclarations officielles concernant cette étape ?
Communiqué: Greg Phillinganes, directeur musical et pianiste sur plusieurs albums de Michael sur une période de vingt ans, a joué la partie piano sur l’un de titres enregistrés avec Cascio et produit pour l’album, et a estimé que la voix était sans nul doute celle de Michael. Dorian Holley, directeur vocal des tournées solo de Michael pendant plus de vingt ans (y compris pour les concerts à l’O2) et qui apparaît dans le fim « This Is It », a entendu les morceaux et m’a dit que la voix principale était celle de Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: Autant de personnes et à chaque fois le doute qui ferait qu’on leur pose la question ?
Communiqué: Tous ces ingénieurs du son, producteurs et musiciens ont travaillé avec Michael en tournée et/ou en studio pendant l’enregistrement de Bad, Thriller, Off The Wall, Dangerous, Invincible, HIStory et Blood On The Dance Floor. Ils ont tous maintenu que d’après eux la voix principale était bien celle de Michael sur les chansons mises en cause.
MJFrance: Le moindre doute, le moindre soupçon, aussi infime soit-il, aurait du laisser la place au principe de précaution. Celui d’écarter le ou les titres douteux lorsqu’il s’agit de la musique de Michael Jackson.
Communiqué: L’Estate a alors fait appel à l’un des experts musicologues les plus renommés du pays pour écouter les voix sans accompagnement instrumental (dit « a cappella ») et les comparer aux versions a capella d’autres chansons de Michael. Cet expert a effectué une analyse de forme d’onde – une analyse scientifique et objective permettant de déterminer l’authenticité audio – sur les titres en question et sur d’autres morceaux officiels contenant la voix de Michael, et a conclu que TOUTES les voix principales analysées (y compris celles enregistrées par Cascio) appartenaient à Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: Comment ça ? Alors les avis de Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze, Teddy Riley, Greg Phillinganes et Dorian Holley ne suffisaient pas ? le doute existait encore ?
Communiqué: Sony Music a mené sa propre enquête en faisant appel aux services d’un deuxième expert musicologue réputé qui a également procédé à une comparaison des voix et en est venu à la même conclusion. L’on a fait écouter ces morceaux à deux personnes détenant une position importante dans l’industrie du disque et dont le rôle dans la carrière de Michael a été décisif. Ces deux personnes ont estimé que la voix principale était celle de Michael.
MJFrance: Qui sont ces personnes, leur noms ? Là aussi, tous les noms précités ne suffisaient pas ? Le doute existait encore ?
Communiqué: Pour en avoir le cœur totalement net, j’ai également contacté Jason Malachi, un jeune chanteur accusé à tort d’être un « sosie vocal » engagé pour figurer sur les chansons enregistrées par Cascio, et ai pu confirmer qu’il n’avait pas la moindre implication dans ce projet.
MJFrance: Le coeur totalement net ? Six producteurs et ingénieurs du son, un directeur musical et pianiste, un directeur vocal, des experts musicologues, deux personnes détenant une position importante dans l’industrie du disque et pour en avoir le coeur net on contacte Jason Malachi ??? Vous avez bien dit Jason Malachi ???
Communiqué: Compte tenu de l’abondance de preuves objectives obtenues suite aux enquêtes exhaustives précédemment décrites, Sony a décidé d’inclure trois des morceaux Cascio-Porte sur l’album ; ils estiment sans réserve que la voix principale figurant sur l’ensemble de ces titres est celle de Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: Jason Malachi quand même ! Il a fallu contacter Jason Malachi pour en avoir le coeur net ? On parle de l’héritage musical de Michael Jackson pour les générations à venir… Au moindre « coeur pas trop net », au moindre doute, ce titre aurait du être écarté.

Statment: Dear Fans
There is nothing more important to the Estate than Michael’s music, his legacy and his fans.
As the Michael album was being put together, it was decided to bring Teddy Riley on board to work on several songs, including « Breaking News, » a song Michael recorded with Eddie Cascio and James Porte in late 2007 while living at the Cascio family home with his children. Riley produced and submitted « Breaking News » to Sony for inclusion on the album.
MJFrance: It is said that Teddy Riley was hired to work on several songs including Breaking News. He produced the title and released it to Sony. But who hired Teddy Riley? The Estate or Sony? What was the real condition of these audio recordings? On what media were they recorded? Were they really usable? With a dignified processing?
At that time, no one ever mentioned that the vocals we heard on the Cascio songs, which were basically in demo format, might not be Michael. It was known, however, that the background vocals were a combination of Michael and James Porte.
MJFrance: Do James Porte really sing only in background vocals?
After the tracks were submitted to Sony, three of these Cascio songs were selected to be on the album, and « Breaking News » was one of the three. The day after the submission and selection of the album tracks, for the very first time, the authenticity of Michael’s vocals on the Cascio tracks was questioned.
MJFrance: When Sony has received the Cascio tracks, they had not been worked by Teddy Riley? It is said above when Teddy Riley submitted the title to Sony, nobody ever expressed any doubts. And now it is said that after the selection of songs by Cascio, doubts have been raised. Contradictary, don’t you think?
Because of these questions, I was immediately asked by co-Executors John Branca and John McClain to conduct an investigation regarding the authenticity of the lead vocals on the Cascio tracks.
MJFrance: Who were asking those questions? Legitimate persons? Names? How, in any doubt about the Michael Jackson music legacy, the Estate or Sony, do not the caution to exclude such a title? Lots of new titles are available. Why take this risk with the King of Pop, such a music legend?
Six of Michael’s former producers and engineers who had worked with Michael over the past 30 years – Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze and Teddy Riley – were all invited to a listening session to hear the raw vocals of the Cascio tracks in question. All of these persons listened to the a cappella versions of the vocals on the Cascio tracks being considered for inclusion on the album, so they could give an opinion as to whether or not the lead vocals were sung by Michael. They all confirmed that the vocal was definitely Michael.
MJFrance: How did they come to confirm that the voice was Michael’s one? Usually, in listening to an a capella version of an artist, it is rare that someone expresses outside a personal opinion on a track, the singer’s voice is hers! Where are their official statements on this stage?
Michael’s musical director and piano player on many of his records over a 20-year period, Greg Phillinganes, played on a Cascio track being produced for the album, and said the voice was definitely Michael’s. Dorian Holley, who was Michael’s vocal director for his solo tours for 20 plus years (including the O2 Concert Tour) and is seen in the This Is It film, listened to the Cascio tracks and told me the lead vocal was Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: So many people and at each time the doubt exists so we would ask them?
These are all engineers, producers and musicians who worked on tours and/or in the studio with Michael when he was recording Bad, Thriller, Off The Wall, Dangerous, Invincible, HIStory and Blood On The Dance Floor, and they all reconfirmed their belief that the lead vocals were Michael’s voice on the Cascio tracks.
MJFrance: The slightest doubt, the slightest suspicion, however small it may be, should have left room to the precautionary principle: to put aside the doubtful titles when it comes to the music of Michael Jackson.
The Estate then retained one of the best-known forensic musicologists in the nation to listen to the vocals without any instrumental accompaniment (« a cappella »), and to compare them with a cappella vocals from previous Michael songs. This expert performed waveform analysis, an objective scientific test used to determine audio authenticity, on the Cascio tracks, as well as previously released tracks with Michael’s voice, and reported that ALL of the lead vocals analyzed (which included Cascio tracks) were the voice of Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: How? So the reviews of Bruce Swedien, Matt Forger, Stewart Brawley, Michael Prince, Dr. Freeze, Teddy Riley, Greg Phillinganes and Dorian Holley were not enough? The doubt still existed?
Sony Music conducted their own investigation by hiring yet a second well-respected forensic musicologist who also compared the a cappella lead vocals from Cascio tracks against previously released vocals of Michael’s, and found that Michael’s voice was the on all sets of the raw vocals. The Cascio tracks were also played for two very prominent persons in the music industry who played crucial roles in Michael’s career. Both of these individuals believed that the lead vocals were Michael’s.
MJFrance: Who are these people, their names? Again, all the names above were not enough? The doubt still existed?
Just to be absolutely certain, I also contacted Jason Malachi, a young singer who some persons had wrongfully alleged was a « soundalike » singer that was hired to sing on the Cascio tracks, and I confirmed that he had no involvement with this project whatsoever.
MJFrance: Just to be absolutely certain? Six producers and sound engineers, a musical director and a pianist, a vocal director, experts musicologists, two people holding a major position in the music industry and to get to the bottom of this, you contacted Jason Malachi?? Did you really say Jason Malachi ???
Sony decided that, given the overwhelming objective evidence resulting from the exhaustive investigations outlined above, they wanted to release a record that included three of the Cascio-Porte tracks – because they believed, without reservation, that the lead vocal on all of those tracks were sung by Michael Jackson.
MJFrance: Jason Malachi, anyway! You had to contact Jason Malachi to get to the bottom of it? We talk about the musical legacy of Michael Jackson for generations to come … At the slight incertainty, the least doubt, this title should have been rejected.
Although there still seem to be concerns being expressed in some quarters about the authenticity of the lead vocals, notwithstanding the opinion of those who worked with Michael, and two independent forensic analysts,
MJFrance: Sorry but you forget to mention that you have also contacted Jason Malachi, to get to the bottom …
ultimately, Michael’s fans will be the judges of these songs, as they always are. We take all fan comments very seriously, and as I’d stated above, there is nothing more important to the Estate than Michael’s music, his legacy and his fans.
MJFrance: If you seriously consider the comments from the fans, why not exclude such one or more tracks on the album as a precaution?
